What is a
Resin Ribbon?

Resin ribbon is the most durable type of thermal transfer ribbon and is specifically designed for use on synthetic labels. Its production process represents one of the most advanced coating technologies in thermal transfer printing, tailored for high-performance applications. As with other ribbon types, the structure is based on a PET (polyester) film approximately 4–5 microns thick, which acts as the primary carrier and is engineered to withstand high temperatures
and mechanical stress.

The defining feature of a resin ribbon is its ink formulation, which consists predominantly of synthetic resins. This structure includes black pigments, strong binders, and various performance-enhancing additives. Wax content is either minimal or entirely absent. As a result, resin ribbons require higher melting temperatures (typically in the range of 110–160°C). While this demands more energy during printing, it produces extremely durable print results.

Resin ribbons are specifically developed for synthetic materials such as PP, PE, and PET. They provide exceptional resistance to chemicals, solvents, high temperatures, humidity, and heavy abrasion. For this reason, they are widely used in industries such as automotive, electronics, chemicals, healthcare, and textiles—particularly in applications where long-term traceability is critical. Examples include product identification labels, asset tags, laboratory labels, and outdoor labels.

Their greatest advantage is superior durability against scratching, smearing, and chemical exposure. However, they are more expensive, require higher printing temperatures, and demand more precise printer settings. Despite these drawbacks, they are essential for applications where maximum durability is required.
